Allians/ce
14. 18h – 30. April 2007 , SPACE Gallery, SK_Bratislava
Jaroslav Kyša (SK), Erik Šille (SK), Radovan Čerevka (SK), Mário Chromý (SK), Tomáš Makara (SK), Erik Binder (SK)
Billboart Gallery Europe
opening/exhibition

Allians/ce or aliens alliance project connects six artists from two „competing“ sides: so-called Kosicans – graduates or students of Art Faculty TU in Kosice (Radovan Cerevka, Tomas Makara and Jaroslav Kysa from Zilina) and, on the other, the so-called Bratislavans – graduates of AFAD in Bratislava (Erik Sille from Roznava, Erik Binder from Hnusta, and Mario Chromy from Bratislava, now living in Prague); in order to contest the theory about poor collaboration, and to highlight connections in the artistic community. A network consisting of three billboards in Kosice and three in Bratislava came out of a collaboration of „mixed“ artistic duos.

Amateurs: Fulfilled Utopia?

18. April 2007 16h, Infocentrum MTP Brno, CZ_Brno
Palo Fabuš (CZ)
FaVU VUT, Jelibojelito (co-organiser), ACStream (co-organiser)
lecture

Video stream: http://stream.node9.org/live.sdp

The artists and theoreticians have called for Utopia since the beginning of 20th century is a part of many phenomena related to new media. Freedom of expression for everyone and liberation from content dictated by media magnates however brings about new, unpredicted factors – and it’s artists who call for a general sobering up.
Palo Fabuš is the culture publicist, critic and theorist. Not a journalist. His former interest in new media has progressively evolved into wide study of contemporary culture applying a variety of approaches such as sociology, media studies, art theory and philosophy. His research centers these days mostly on the relationship of ICT and evolution of cultural values, contemporary zeitgeist and perception of time.

Since 2009 editor of Umělec. Teaches Social Media course at Department of Media Studies and Journalism FSS MU Brno and occasionally FF MU Brno, FaVU Brno, FIT VUT Brno, FAMU Prague, AVU Prague. Studied Bc. (Applied Informatics) at Faculty of Informatics, Masaryk University in Brno. MA Student at Department of Media Studies and Journalism FSS MU Brno. In 2004-2005 editor-in-chief of IM6. In 2005 and 2006 curator of Zoom festival. From 2005 to 2008 worked as an editor of Literární noviny. In 2007 co-founded Jlbjlt. After seven years of living in Brno, moved in 2009 to Prague.

Evolution Night: Live Partition
(streaming)

19. April 2007 20h, A4 - Zero Space, SK_Bratislava
Longital (SK), Floex (Tomáš Dvořák) (CZ), Tomáš Vaněk (CZ), Jakub Zítko (CZ)
A4 – Associations for contemporary culture, Culture Transfer (co-organiser), CIANT - International Centre for Art and New Technologies (organiser), Czech Centre (organiser), Atrakt Art
performance

Video recording: http://smecnet.itchybit.org/ public/longital.ogg

Forget VJing, there is a more provoking form of visual interpretation of music.
The first part of the evening will introduce musicians Sina and Daniel Salontay from the project Longital, also known as Dlhe Diely, who will be recorded in real-time and visually transformed via motion tracking by artist Tomas Vanek.
In the second part, the live partition supported by other musicians (Jakub Zitko, Tomas Dvorak) will bring the interpretation of Longital into live audio-visual form.
The inner logic of live partition can be metaphorically compared to the sun system. Sun is the sound object and particular planets are effect objects, that together by their combinations, sizes and distances from Sun create audio-algorithmic situations and let the sound develop further.

Filling up the holes
14. April 2007 9h, Tranzit workshops, SK_Bratislava
open participation, Laco Teren (SK) (concept)
tranzit.sk

Selected artists will be invited to propose and realise the filling up of holes in the fence of the Studena 12 area. Technical assistants (welder, etc.) will be present. Only second-hand material available in the neighbourhood will be used. Each filled hole will be tagged with the authorship and the text „in the frame of MULTIPLACE 2007“. The project includes a practical aspect - the need for better security at the space, and metaphorically communicates the needs of a local cultural environment. On the spot we expect massive discussions on an informal basis.

Finis Terrae
13. April 18h – 03. May 2007 , 13m3 Gallery, SK_Bratislava
Nóra Ružičková (SK), Anna Daučíková (SK) (opening word), Mária Čorejová (SK) (coordination), Alena Adamíková (SK) (coordination)
13 kubikov
opening/exhibition

Finis Terrae means the end of earth in Latin. It is a place where the earth ends and doubt begins. For the author of the exhibition, in a general sense it gives a name to the provisional position in which she tries to put the viewer via her video-installations. It deals with uncertainty in the field of identification (visual, acoustic..) perception. The video works of Nora Ruzickova produced in 2002 – 2005 thematise bodily experience as the basic source of our linguistic understanding of the world, as immediate foundation for handling other experiences, and as the primary and richest source of metaphor.

Full Service Video
14. 18h – 17. April 2007 , SPACE Gallery, SK_Bratislava
Jakub Pišek (SK), Mikuláš Podprocký (SK), Ivana Madariová (SK) (curator)
SPACE projects | residency lab | store
opening/exhibition

Exhibition Full Service Video examines the path film can take, not only its composition, but also its accessibility and technical setup.
Jakub Pisek will present an interactive video installation that is activated by sound. It also asks the question – to speak or not to speak while watching a movie?
The work of Mikulas Podprocky shifts more to a critique of content of mainstream film production. In his interactive animation he gives each viewer a choice – action, romantic/erotic film or drama – then has the Movie Generator create the film for the individual viewer out of typical film scenes. The originality and value of such a film corresponds to a number of today’s blockbusters, while production time and budget are incomparably more effective.

Discussion/lecture on the function and applicability of radio and radioart in contemporary Czech and Slovak Republic and an attempt at a comparison with surrounding countries. The search for identity and context in the functioning of European community FM and internet radios. What is the point of building a public audiovisual archive and netcasting?

The workshop is intended for everyone with a basic knowledge of computer manipulation of audio and video. It will focus on acquiring theoretical and practical knowledge in broadcasting – streaming sound and image material over the internet. Everyone with a computer, audio device and minidisc (or just old magnetophone or tape dictaphone) has the ability to build their own mini radio station.

Presentation of Radio Lemurie and its activities – theory of internet and idea of temporary autonomous zone – netradio genres overview (censorship, freedom, copyright) – idea of connecting more internet radios into the one (sharing) – netradio communities – Radio Territories, Radiactivity – technical conditions for streaming (software, hardware) – poetics of the internet ether with practical examples.

Sampling: From Regression To Transgression In Listening
17. April 2007 19.30h, Ciant Gallery, CZ_Prague
Lucia Udvardyova (SK/CZ)
CIANT - International Centre for Art and New Technologies
lecture

Recontextualisation, remanipulation, remix. The modus operandi of a great part of 20th century art was characterized by recontextualisation of the “old“ into the “new“ by an increasingly active consumer. Following in the footsteps of the recontextualisation discourse of futurism, dadaism or musique concrete is music sampling as seen in contemporary music, be it hip hop, electronic music or pop. The grounds for the theoretical framework is the polemics of Theodor W. Adorno and Walter Benjamin on production and reception of media messages. Adorno´s assertion about the implicit passivity of recipients contrasts with the later theoretical paradigms of French neomarxism, semiotics and cultural studies (Michel de Certeau, Roland Barthes, Julia Kristeva, Umberto Eco, Stuart Hall; Chris Cutler and plundrophonics, Nicolas Bourriaud and postproduction), which emphasize the activity of the consumer of symbolic messages. Sampling, as an example of active “consumption“ has blurred the boundaries between consumption and production, paving the way for a so called “prosumer“.
Lucia Udvardyova graduated from Faculty of Humanities of the Charles University in 2006. She interested in elektronic music, street art, DIY media and subcultures.

installation

Videoinstallation „So See You Later“ consists of five loops compiled from uncut video that Klara’s father filmed over several years at the family cottage holidays. We are watching seemingly innocent scenes where the father as a person behind camera sets recorded reality to the position he chooses without hesitation.

Klara Dolezalkova has performed several times with the experimental music group Kunst-ruch-ter as well as at the last year’s Multiplace in Bratislava. As a student of Audiovisual Studies at FAMU she works with various media.

Pash* is known mostly as the author of weird characters in the Prague streets, recently he has jumped into painting, original animations and also interactive installations with which he feels more and more comfortable. He studies the camera at FAMU and doesn’t wash his feet.

Michal Kindernay and Givan Bela explore their network audiovisual lab live in 5 different locations. Techniques of micromontage, granularity, transcoding, distributed networked processing and many others will be tested in real-time. One day the real piece will emerge - or maybe not at all if the idea of a real piece disappears by then. Is there a future for art when old retards persist in asking useless questions like: "Ist die Moderne unsere Antike?". Meantime, come and visit the labs at the designated locations. Or connect to the websites. Beauty not included.

Synchroni-cities

Synchroni-cities is a simultaneous urban exploration quest playing with the idea of creating "multiplaces" (sets of synonymous places that have the same definition: the same trail leads to them).

The game takes place in the real world (in different cities of different countries) and the internet.

The concept: "A trail can lead to many places. Places a given trail leads to define a multiplace."

Gamers have to subscribe to the game website to be able to play. This is how the game unfolds:
The player receives a trail to complete. Each trail is represented by a "flag", and before starting his journey, the player has to create the flag of the trail. The player has to go out in the real world and complete the trail. The player is required to document his trail by uploading texts and images telling the story of his journey. The final photographs belonging to a trail completed by different players form sets. Each set of places defines a multiplace. Players are also encouraged to submit new trails and rate other's completed trails.

The duration of the game is 9 days. The game winners will be awarded prizes consisting of objects from other cities participating in the game (having a local specific character).

If our attempt will be successfull, you will meet as in the infocenter, coding with heads in our laptops and speaking various kinds on English and looking around for peopel interested to watse time and join us. If not in the physical world, then a second chance is to trace us on the festival's website or on an.itchybit.org, plotting on the networks. TypeTrace is an interactive application that records all the keyboard strokes you make, similar to Spyware. The application plays back the writing along a timeline just like a movie; the main feature is that it reflects the delay time between each keystroke into various visual representations of the output text. For this version, the more time the writer spends before typing a word, the bigger the font size become. Using this visual translation, the viewer can visually understand the process of each person’s writing experience. All the text inputs are licenced under a Creative Commons licence, and it is used for a text mash-up function that is included in the alpha release of the software (with GPL) on the project website. This is aimed at developing not only the individual piece as an end product, but also to propose a new aesthetics and custom which pays more attention to the process of production than the end result. TypeTrace Kinetic Keyboard (T2K2) is a hardware keyboard that synchronizes with the TypeTrace application. Each T2K2 key is respectively linked with a solenoid, allowing each key to function physically, as the player piano, in accordance with the file running on the application. TYPETRACE is the first in a series of exhibitions at CIANT Gallery entitled Hic sunt leones which is focused on artists coming from non-European countries.

Materidouska – Tereza Damcova (voice, performance, image), Jiri Suchanek (music, animation, camera). Brno-based duo creates sound-tales and visual flights of imagination from the dreamworld where the main character – the weirdly smiling, permanently morphing, cosmically comical, loved and hated Bubacka doll – walks about. Audiovisual performance combining processed voice, live mixed authored music, video-projections from animated pen-drawings, a plastic alien and masks of mostly leopardese mutants.

Mimo-TV – isawiwasi – alcaloide generator of crystal sounds presents your ears with another deep, sparklingly sharp, even freezing, sometimes dry and overlying orange story of silence. Out of the moss and bracken with the oinking sounds, pitipa melodies and tampatynk rhythms comes Daniel Spacek Embryo and Barka Mottlova with Milan Malik 000333 as the downtempo&chillout live audio project alien broadcasting of Mimo-TV central. Natur produkt – „VJing itself was not our aim. We connected the experience of film editing with DJing and nowadays we do audiovisual sets composed from sampled videoclips and films of all genres, while from particular samples we use both sound and image. In other words, at live performances we mix ie. videoclip with another videoclip, or a film. This is the great way to link DJ and VJ into one person, which is not possible when the image and sound are reproduced separately.“

Postmusic Production, Culture Transfer, Goethe-Institut Prag

Kosmischer Pitch is Jan Jelinek's band project, an artist whose original recordings were sourced from old jazz records. Made up of Jelinek on laptop, Andrew Pekler on guitar and Hanno Leichtmann on percussion, the music of Kosmischer Pitch makes plenty of allusions to Germany's Kraturock era in the mood created by the loops and layers of drifting sound. Minimalism, psychedelia and deep house - these genres also influence this project, in the way the music creates a sustained intensity that enfolds the listener.

Dictaphone - Made up of Oliver Doerell on electronics and Roger Doering on clarinet, Dictaphone fuses jazz, electronics and field recordings to create extremely atmospheric, beautiful music that defies classification. City Centre Offices release Dictaphone's work.
www.dictaphone-music.de

Neutrino is the project of Petr Mares on the edges of the electronic music spectrum, genre eclecticism and electronic experiments, looking for possibilities in genres like downtempo, abstract hip hop, ambient and post-dub.

Kotra is the solo project of Dmytri Fedorenko, who is the director of the Detali Zvuku festival which will host Unsound On Tour in Kiev. He has released 12 full-length albums of precise digital sound manipulation. His live shows are intense experiences, often involving overwhelming blasts of noise and stumbling beats.
kotra.org.ua

Subsist - Petr Toman, a tireless promoter of minimalist music in the CZ knows how it feels to be a pioneer of a minority music during his career behind the decks. After leaving his regular nights at the club Bristol in Letohrady he tried to go his own way with clicks and cuts, which was particularly tough in the beginning. Today, Petr belongs among the Czech top minimal DJs.

Cobra Killer - Known for their explosive live shows, Cobra Killer is a female duo from Berlin including Annika Line Trost and Gina V.D'Orio. They make 60s-sound electronic rock with subversive lyrics and sharp breaks, and have albums released on the Monika Enterprise label. Their international shows include dates for Sonic Youth. The Wire wrote of their live show: "Cobra Killer.. look like refugees from faster pussycat! Kill! Kill! And perform their set of charged, mutant disco like a pair of deranged go-go girls.."
www.cobra-killer.org

Kate Wax - Half-Swiss and Half-Tibetan, Kate Wax plays lo-fi electro(clash) songs with lyrics both spoken and sung, blending styles such as minimal techno, electro punk, grime, ambient industrial blues, and more. For her frenetic live shows she now plays live with Swiss band Dave The Hustler on drums. Her UOTab appearances will coincide with the release of her new album The Dark Heat Collections, including remixes by Ellen Allien, Apparat and Roman Fluegel.
www.myspace.com/katewax

Mitch & Mitch - A five-headed duo started in 2002 as Mitch and Mitch released their now legendary debut "Luv Yer Country" in 2003 and a new album "12 Catchy Tunes (We Wish We Had Composed)" in 2006. Mitch & Mitch have caused panic in many Polish and European cities. The future looks bright for them! Whatever happens, they'll continue with their tour, wrecking clubs and stadiums on their way. You've been warned! They will arrive!

Andrey Kiritchenko is the founder of Nexsound, Ukraine's most adventurous music label with a strong international reputation. Having released more than 30 albums, he now describes himself as a "cross-genre experimental sound artist" combining acoustic and digital esthetics, tiny melodies and noise. In 2006 he was nominated in the discovery category of the Quartz Electronic Music Awards.

Machine Funck - Bringing together people with machines allows us to create a fusion known as electronic music. The basis for this is record decks, but the fun does not stop here. Samplers, effects, synths, vocoders, and more decks and mixers - all of this forms a pulsing entity from which you can hear the sounds of advanced electronic music, slower fairytale-like ballads to aggressive pumping robotics. On-line remixing, live and direct.

Materidouska – Tereza Damcova (voice, performance, image), Jiri Suchanek (music, animation, camera). Brno-based duo creates sound-tales and visual flights of imagination from the dreamworld where the main character – the weirdly smiling, permanently morphing, cosmically comical, loved and hated Bubacka doll – walks about. Audiovisual performance combining processed voice, live mixed authored music, video-projections from animated pen-drawings, a plastic alien and masks of mostly leopardese mutants.

Dictaphone - Made up of Oliver Doerell on electronics and Roger Doering on clarinet, Dictaphone fuses jazz, electronics and field recordings to create extremely atmospheric, beautiful music that defies classification. City Centre Offices release Dictaphone's work.

Special Edition: New Video Art from Central Europe

17. April – 08. July 2007 , RISD Museum, US_Providence

Viera Levitt, RISD Museum (co-operation)
opening/exhibition

Part 1: Azzoro Group (Oskar Dawicki, Igor Krenz, Wojciech Niedzielko, Lukasz Skapski), Anetta Mona Chişa & Lucia Tkáčová, Little Warsaw (András Gálik, Bálint Havas)
Part 2: Ilona Németh, Pavel Mrkus, Juraj Dudáš
Part 3: Pavlína Fichta Čierna, Zbyněk Baladrán

The RISD Museum presents a rotation of three programs guest-curated by Viera Levitt: Art Power 17.4. - 13.5., Global Impact 15.5. - 10.6., Their Stories 12.6.-8.7. Each program centers on emerging questions specific to this post-communist region.

New Video Art from Central Europe, Part 1: Art Power
With an eye for Central European artists' marked sense of irony and sarcasm, this program explores contemporary art's social side, its relationship to power, and how it can be used or misused by artists such as the Azzoro Group (with artists Oskar Dawicki, Igor Krenz, Wojciech Niedzielko, Lukasz Skapski) of Poland, Anetta Mona Chisa & Lucia Tkacova of Slovakia, and Little Warsaw (with artists Andras Galik and Balint Havas) of Hungary.

New Video Art from Central Europe, Part 2: Global Impact
Are artists from the Central European region dealing with the same issues as Americans? This program underlines the connections between Central Europe and United States, looking at omnipresent globalization and notions of civilization. Artists include Ilona Nemeth (Slovakia), Pavel Mrkus (the Czech Republic), and Juraj Dudas (Slovakia).

New Video Art from Central Europe, Part 3: Their Stories
The final instalment of this series, featuring artist Pavlina Fichta Cierna (Slovakia), looks closely at the stories of those who live on the margins of society; and forgotten histories from the communist past in Zbynek Baladran's video collages using the archive materials (Czech Republic).

Video in Person: Viera Levitt, Curator
May 17, 6:30-7:30 pm

Viera Levitt talks about issues in contemporary art from the Slovak Republic, the Czech Republic, Poland, and Hungary. These countries have had similar upheavals in their recent history and are now confronting a newly emerging capitalism that is creating an interesting cultural clash. How is the contemporary art from this region different from that of Western Europe or the USA? Do artist express their experience or try to forget it in order to become global citizens? Is this concept of "region" still legitimate or important?

OST-960

Open space, sound installation „OST 960 pump“ is a space for meditation in a dark room with the sound of heat distribution. You can arrange other events during the upcoming Multiplace days. Since the space will probably still have no electricity, everything will be un-plugged, on its own engine, batteries, candles.. maybe a rallye and hurdle for remote control cars? Mobile music production – trying out the composition with a choir of melodies of participants‘ cell phones? Beat box or vox? Energy created by a hamster in a wheel? Ways of creating energy, heat in plastic bags, dynamos??? Bring something that runs on batteries (for sure you already have something like that with you)!
Call: I am looking for paper egg boxes in order to create a sound-isolated room.

What phase is the Slovak internet in right now? Is it lagging behind the more developed or is it rising, thanks to the suffix 2.0? It was not such a long time ago that the Slovak Wikipedia could be browsed in an hour. Today, with more than 60 000 articles, you would need several days. Original content, in the form of video was not ever dreamed of. Tomorrow, it might be offered by all the bigger portals. Despite a delay, this medium is also becoming an integral part of the personal and of the public in Slovakia. Enthusiasts scan books for free, comment on everyday life on their blogs, and experiment with form and with collaborative approach. Amateurs become professionals and users become curators of digital content. We will let it reflect in a critical mirror and we will look into the crystal ball - bring your questions.
